The First Principles Project

About Us

The First Principles Project Is an ongoing initiative of elders, chiefs and negotiators of Yukon treaties including the Umbrella Final Agreement, Land claims settlements and Canada’s first third-order Aboriginal Self-government agreements.

What We're Doing

In January 2020 forty former negotiators, supported by journalists and academics, met in Whitehorse to extract a 9-page Core Principles document from the original 292-page Umbrella Final Agreement (UFA). We continue to build on that important foundation by providing citizens with platforms and opportunities to learn about the UFA, and the spirit and intent in which it was created.

Spirit and intent

In 1989 we reached agreement on the UFA, which was a total of 292 pages. In comparison, the US Constitution is only 12 pages and read by every American student. We are dedicated to ensuring that those now implementing the treaty understand the original spirit & intent of the UFA.
